Sydney City Chiptune Ministries to release 'chipbreak alliance' compilation, June 28
SYDNEY CITY CHIPTUNE MINISTRIES is an Australian record label founded in 2021 by Bird's Robe artist Tom Gilmore, who played on numerous Bird's Robe bills as Ten Thousand Free Men and Their Families in the earlier days of Sydney's experimental live music scene.
The label is primarily focused on chipmusic; a broad genre umbrella under electronic music which is fundamentally about the sound chips found in vintage arcade machines, computers, and video game consoles popular in the 1980s and 1990s, and seeing what cool musical things you can do with them.
In 2024, Gilmore (now working under the alias LOW STAKES), teamed up with UK-based chiptuner firebrandboy (8bitpeoples) to make a compilation of new chiptunes, that rallied a team of artists to make tracks inspired by the noughties-era subgenre 'chipbreak'.
The goal was to bring back the warm, happy, fast, fun of the genre. Quickly it became apparent that this idea was resonating with some of the longest-serving members of the global scene, who signed on board.
Gilmore said:
"This compilation is a dream come true. Every one of these artists is an inspiration to me, and they're all big reasons I run this little label in this little niche. I am stoked beyond belief that firebrandboy rallied us all together. I'm excited on behalf of all those on the compilation for chipmusic fans to hear it!"
